Forest Service Roads: Deferred Maintenance The Forest Service (FS) is experiencing an unprecedented level of Deferred Maintenance. The FS total, agency wide is projected at $ 5.7 billion with Roads making up a majority of this amount, at $ 4.15 billion. (ref: FY09 Budget Justification – USDA Forest Service, page15-20)

Fact Finding • We sent out an e-mail questionnaire • We received 44 • e-mail responses, which automatically populated our database • Mostly “traditional” type partnerships
More Fact FindingRegrouping to find more Non-Traditional Road Partnerships • We developed a new set of contacts to interview • Forest Engineers • Road Managers • Partnership Coordinators • Volunteer Coordinators • And others involved this kind of partnering • 17 grew to a total of 56 contacts
Selected Case Studies We selected the potential case studies We re-interviewed the contacts and worked with them to create a case study story ready for publication These are the selected case studies
Writing the Case Studies We developed a template of information required on each case study We interviewed each selected contact We wrote the case study and had each interviewed contact review, comment and have final say on the story. We ensured their consent and approval before publication Here is an example of one of the stories
Publishing the Story We plan on publishing the stories on this page in association with a partnership the NPO has with the Forest Foundation The NPO is facilitating getting a story of our project on the FS Today We plan on using the NPO partnership network
