Joshua 1Lessons for Today We need to be a faithful “servant of Jehovah” like Moses (1:1-2,7,13,15; Tit. 1:1; James 1:1; Rev. 15:3). We need to “minister” to our brethren like Joshua ministered to Moses (1:1; Mt. 20:26-28). We need courageous leaders (elders) among God’s people today (1:2; 1 Tim. 3:1ff; Tit. 1:5ff). We need to remember that the Lord will be with those who faithfully serve him (1:5,9; Mt. 28:20; Heb. 13:5-6).
Joshua 1Lessons for Today We need strength and courage like Joshua to conquer our enemies. Great challenges call for great courage (1:6-9,18; 1 Cor. 16:13; Eph. 6:10; 2 Tim. 1:7). We need to observe God’s law without deviating from it in order to be prosperous (1:6-9; Psa. 119: 105; 2 Jn. 9; Rev. 22:18-19). We need to remember the Lord’s question: “Have not I commanded you?” (1:9; Jn. 14:15,21; 15:10; 1 Jn. 5:4).
Joshua 1Lessons for Today We need to help our brethren fight their battles (1:12-15; Eph. 2:10ff; 1 Tim. 6:12; 2 Tim. 2:3-4; 4:7). We need to keep our word and take our promises and commitments seriously (1:16-18; Jas. 5:12).
Spy Mission to Jericho ( Joshua 2 ) Israel Camped at Shittim (Josh. 2:1; 3:1) Gilgal
Joshua 2Lessons for Today A person with a sordid past like Rahab can change and do great things for the Lord (2:1; 1 Cor. 6:9-11; 1 Tim. 1:13-16). Let us be a person of faith like Rahab who hid the spies – a faith that acts, a faith that obeys (2:6; Heb. 11:31; Jas. 2:25). Faith in the Lord should cause one to fear the Lord (2:8-11; 2 Cor. 7:1; Heb. 12:28-29).
Joshua 2Lessons for Today Let us all confess, like Rahab, that the Lord is God in heaven and on earth (2:11; Eph. 4:6). Do you want the “scarlet thread” of salvation to hang from your home showing that you want everyone in your household to be saved by the blood of Jesus (2:18,21; Eph. 1:7)? The Lord keeps his promises (2:24; Tit. 1:2).
Crossing the Jordan River ( Joshua 3-4 ) Israel Camped at Shittim (Josh. 2:1; 3:1) Gilgal
Jordan Crossed 1st Month, 10th Day (Joshua 4:19) Passover Observed 1st Month, 14th Day (Joshua 5:10)
Joshua 3Lessons for Today God reveals his will ahead of time in a clear and understandable way (3:3-4; Eph. 5:17; Heb. 1:1-2). It is important to let God lead us as we travel through life (3:3-6; Rev. 7:17). God’s people march forward in faith and obedience (3:3-4; Heb. 12:1-2) It is important to be “sanctified” (set apart) before we travel through life (3:5; 1 Cor. 6:11; 2 Tim. 2:21).
Joshua 3Lessons for Today It is important to “fear” (respect) God’s leaders because God himself honors them (3:7; 4:14; 1 Thess. 5:12-13; Heb. 13:7,17,24). The miracles of God demonstrate that he is a “living God” and that man can place his trust in God (3:7,10; 4:14; Ex. 14:31; Jn. 20:30-31). God is “the Lord of all the earth” (3:11,13; Acts 10:36; Rom. 10:12).
Joshua 4Lessons for Today Parents are teachers of their children (4:6,21; Eph. 6:1-4). It is important for Christians to remember with a memorial (the Lord’s Supper) the deliverance and the salvation the Lord has provided for his children (4:1-7,20-24; 1 Cor. 11:23-26).
Preparing to Conquer Jericho ( Joshua 5-6) Joshua’s Camp Headquarters at Gilgal (Josh. 4:19-20; 5:9-10; 9:6; 10:6,7,9,15,43) Gilgal
Conquer and Divided: Joshua’s Three Campaigns 3 3. Northern Campaign (Josh. 11) 1. Central Campaign (Josh. 6-8) 1 2. Southern Campaign (Josh. 9-10) 2
Joshua 5Lessons for Today Christians are to be “circumcised” in heart (5:2; Rom. 2:29; Phil. 3:3; Col. 2:11). There is no excuse for disobedience (5:2; Eph. 5:6; Col. 3:6; Heb. 2:2; 4:6,11). Christians have Jesus as their “Passover” feast (5:10; 1 Cor. 5:7). God gives us our daily bread (5:11-12; Mt. 6:11).
Joshua 5Lessons for Today May we all fall down and worship when we are in the presence of God (5:14; Mt. 2:11; Lk. 5:8; Rev. 4:10; 5:8,14; 19:14). The Lord will help us fight our battles (5:14; Eph. 6:10ff). We must remember we stand before a holy God (5:15; Rev. 4:8).
