  3. PLANNER: Tonight’s Homework • Think about how the Renaissance and the Muromachi Periods differ. Write a paragraph comparing and contrasting both periods.

  4. The Muromachi Period • In Japan, during the Renaissance, there was a new period of art occurring— the Muromachi period • Japan was in a state of war • There was constant political and economic upheaval— they were never completely at rest

  7. So… What Changed? • We had a time of feudal Japan that focused so much on war and destruction that the Japanese needed some peace in their life • Where they found this was actually in something that seems common in our studies… • The Japanese found peace in religion

  8. So… What Changed? • The introduction of Zen Buddhism changed a lot for the Japanese during the Muromachi period • This caused an entire shift in art- the pieces themselves became more sophisticated and focused on the peace that Zen could bring

  9. So… What Changed? • The Japanese also began to take influence from the Chinese in art and religion • Once they began to see a new direction in terms of art and religion, specific and unique artists started to actually emerge in Japan • And… there was a lot of patronage!

  10. Chanoyu (tea) Aesthetic • During this time, tea drinking had become a huge aesthetic and ideal in Japanese culture • Influenced by Zen culture • Developed by affluent men in the 15th century

Chanoyu (tea) Aesthetic • There were two main cultural and spiritual values that came from the tea drinking ceremonies • These were called wabi and sabi • Wabi is taking value and pleasure in solitude, beauty in simplicity, and an appreciation for objects that are weathered by time • Sabi is a feeling of detachment and tranquility, similar to that achieved at the end of life
