  2. Appreciating the World Around you • Think about one your classes—how many differences can you find? • How many similarities • No matter how many different groups there are, there is always more variety within groups

  3. Think about the 2 Aspects of Diversity • What is your personal responsibility to yourself? • What is your personal responsibility to others?

  4. Benefits of Diversity • More perspectives gives more possible solutions to problems and challenging situations

  5. Barriers to Appreciating Diversity • Stereotypes • Fear • Prejudice • Incorrect assumptions

  6. Stereotypes • We all make snap decisions based on incomplete information, however that is just the first step in thinking, you must look deeper

  7. Avoiding Stereotypes continued • Avoid making judgments until you have fully assessed a situation (hard to do, easy to talk about) • Get educated about common situations

  8. Be as sensitive as you can be Active listening Bernie Segal—take the view of a “native” not a “tourist” you notice much more when you think you might be “staying” Be proactive Learn form history, many groups have been victimized: Native Americans, Jews, Tibetans Avoiding Stereotypes Continued

  9. Teach your children about diversity Be a culturally competent care giver Learn another language when able Alter communication styles for different situation Overcoming Stereotypes

  11. Send “I” messages Be assertive within reason Think before your speak Give feedback Use a variety of styles Write things down Encourage questions Ask people to restate or demonstrate what you said or taught Overcoming problems

  12. Make relationships a high priority—this in itself is a cultural trait Dedicate some time to cultivating these relationships-doesn’t have to be hours Show appreciation! Even when you don’t get it Refuse to tolerate racism, sexism or other inappropriate conduct, especially jokes which are hurtful, no matter how well intentioned they are Building Working Relationships

  13. Criticism • It’s so much easy to give than receive! • Receiving and responding to criticism is another important skills as is giving helpful criticism

  14. Conflict Prevention • Some conflict, if handled well can be a source of great creativity • The issue to keep something that is frustrating from becoming something that cripples and disables a person or group

  15. Conflict Strategies • Clearly identify the problem and all the related components—most problems are part of larger issues • Simple solutions to complex problems are wrong—resist taking the easiest route of solution to the problem

  16. More Strategies • Brainstorm—here’s that word again • Explore alternative solutions (does this sound familiar (problem solving strategies) • Choose, carry out and evaluate a solution • Be alert to changing issues

  17. Receiving Criticism • Be constructive • Be aware of cultural mores and standards • Be sensitive—when is the right time and place to criticize • Forgive! Especially yourself if you made the mistake

  18. Some people are natural leaders or followers Some are comfortable with both roles Be sure to lead and follow! Participate Be organized Discuss, discuss, discuss—not dominate Keep your word Focus on ideas not people Be fair! Groups Sounds like some great rules for ALL of life!

  19. Leaders • Many RN to BSN students are natural leaders • Many are becoming BSNs so they can assume leadership roles • These roles can be formal or informal
