How do we find locations on a map? • If you look at page 138 fig 7.8: you can see Ireland is divided into 25 squares each with its own letter name • This is called the NATIONAL GRID • A grid reference also contains numbers on the bottom of the map and up the side of the map • The numbers on the bottom of the map look like this: • I I I I I I THEY MOVE TOWARD THE EAST • 01 02 03 04 05 06 they are called EASTINGS • WE ALWAYS READ THEM FIRST!
NORTHINGS • THE LINES AT THE SIDE LOOK LIKE THIS: • 58 ____________ they are called NORTHINGS 57____________ • 56____________ • NOW WE ARE GOING TO USE BOTH THE EASTINGS AND THE NORTHINGS TO FIND A PLACE ON THE MAP • THIS IS CALLED USING A 4 FIGURE GRID REFERENCE

A four figure grid reference points you towards a particular square on a map. On all OS maps these squares represent one square kilometre. All maps will have lines numbered around the edge. These will not always start at zero but will increase both upwards and across the map. (See the example below). A four figure grid reference will point you to the bottom left hand corner of that particular grid square. Follow the red NEXT buttons to see how these work then try the examples given.
You are now at the bottom left hand corner of grid square 21 31
