How can support organisations (CVS) make meaningful relationships with commissioners? Rob Kurn Health Development Team Leader Southampton Voluntary Services
Session plan • Introductions / expectations • What SVS have done • AHP learning • Exercise – planning activity in your area • Feedback
Introductions • Name and job role • Anything in particular people would like to get out of the session?
SVS – what have we done? • Build networks around communities of interest – MH, drugs, OP etc. • Find out what these groups want • Get to know the commissioning / strategic leads • What do they need from the sector? • Get a seat at the table representing the sector
SVS – what helps to achieve this? • Manage groups expectations – things don’t change overnight! • Develop clear guidelines for representation • Work with the commissioner – not against them • There are specific things the sector can offer – identify these and make the commissioners aware!
SVS - activity • Sector briefings with key strategic players • Invite commissioning leads to network meetings / fora • Influence commissioners to involve sector in strategic work – i.e. JSNA • Health Conference 2012, Meet DASC, Meet PCT Cluster lead, JSNA consultation, HealthWatch Consultation, Urgent Care Project, AHP etc
A Healthier Perspective - learning • Understanding market opportunities • Supporting effective partnerships • Getting the process right • Using evidence to best effect
Understanding market opportunities As a support organisation you could: • Position yourself as a leader/gateway for Voluntary and Community Organisations (VCOs) in your area. • Identify the potential for your role as a broker between commissioners and the VCOs in your area. • Identify a way into the Health & Wellbeing Board in your local area.
Supporting effective partnerships As a support organisation you could: • Foster networking within the voluntary sector and with commissioners. • Develop your role as a facilitator of relationships. • Publicise success stories to promote positive relationships with commissioners and providers.
Getting the process right As a support organisation you could: • Know who commissions what so you can signpost effectively. • Build your role as a facilitator and conduit between commissioners and the sector.
Using evidence to best effect As a support organisation you could: • Signpost or give direct support to providers in collecting and presenting evidence. • Build your own expertise in gathering and presenting evidence. • Advise commissioners on different types of evidence for different services and outcomes.
Exercise – 30 minutes • In groups of 4 discuss what you are currently doing in your areas. • Identify gaps in your current provision • Where would you like to be in a years time? • Plan realistic actions to get you to your destination • Use AHP learning to guide your planning
Feedback – 15 minutes • Feedback one priority action from each group • How are you going to achieve this? • Who do you need to get on board?
