What is Competency-based education (CBE)? • CBE is an educational modelthatis: • orientedtooutcomes • tracks learners progress and performance • basedontheneedsofthe learner,moreaccountabilityandflexibility • focusedonachievingskillsandperformance (vs. time spent in training)
CANMEDS 2015 – WHAT’S NEW • 80 – 90% SAME • 10 – 20% changes • Simpler, more direct language • Competence as a continuum • Overlapping areas minimized • Added SAMPLE ‘milestones’ toward competencies • Leader (vs Manager) • More emphasis on patient safety, physician health, leadership
What is competency by Design (CBD)? • Royal College application of CME principles • A hybrid model of CME • Specialty by specialty roll out
Milestones • Milestones are descriptions of the abilities expected of a trainee or physician at a defined stage of professional development. • PURPOSE • Marking the progression of competence • Defined targets to guide learning and assessment • Can be used to develop benchmarks for progress or promotion
Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) ‘a critical part of professional work that can be identified as a unit to be entrusted to a trainee once sufficient competence has been reached’ (ten Cate, 2006)
