Overview of Tracker Interlocks • Designed to protect tracker equipment, in particular the VLPC cassettes, from damage due to failure in part of the tracker control system • John Webb from DL electrical engineering group has taken the basic hardwired “cosmic ray” interlocks and developed a more comprehensive system that is now based around standard I/O modules, VME control and EPICS software • The system is also expanded for use with the spectrometer (not shown here)
Existing connections between FNAL tracker rack and cryostats • These connections are for controlling suitable operating conditions.
New connections between Interlocks VME crate and tracker equipment • These connections are for monitoring and safety shutdown control

Connected Equipment for Interlocks • RS232 modules connect with:- • Oxford temperature controllers • MKS Vacuum gauge • Wiener cryostat PSU's? • ADC (&DAC) modules connect with:- • Cryo compressor external connectors • Cryo lid temperature control boxes • Cryostat insulation vacuum control connector • Vesda smoke detector • Tracker rack smoke alarm
Interlocks Programming • EPICS control/interlocks software to be written by Adrian Oates at DL • GUI will run on PC in MLCR • AlarmAction logic mostly agreed upon although this needs to be confirmed • Flexible hardware/software architecture allows for easier development in the future • Additional non-resetting mains power breakers will be used on equipment to avoid IC QA rig situation
Vesda Smoke Detector • Senses smoke above AFEIIt boards. Alarm signal connected into interlocks system. • Presently have one Vesda smoke detector covering 2 cryo’s. Need to purchase another and investigate if we need greater airflow rate due to length of pipework. • Plan to ask Fire Suppression Ltd to validate design and installation in the hall. They will also provide short training course with the monitoring software.
Summary • Hardware design and drawings are nearing completion • Assembly of electronics rack likely to start at DL next month • Programming to start as soon as above is available • Some detail of action logic to be confirmed • Need to provide mains breakers in the hall • Need to validate smoke detection system • John Webb’s alarms-actions list follows. It was last discussed in August 08 and it needs some amending. I don’t suggest you think about it now unless you are in front of schedule!
