Project objectives The overall aim of the project is to contribute significantly to the harmonisation of food waste monitoring, feasibility of social innovative measures for optimised food use in the food chain and the development of a Common Food Waste Policy for EU28. Project duration: 48 months (2012 – 2016)

Project objectives Our main instruments to achieve this are • (1) stimulating communication and discussion between multiple stakeholders in the food chain regarding socially innovative solutions for optimised food use on science and practice based evidence; and • (2) enabling analysis of long term trends in food waste management, by a better understanding, and availability, of food waste data and greater integration of stakeholders and activities from across the EU and the candidate countries

WP1: Objectives Assess food waste quantities and trends in food waste prevention and reduction by: • Establishing a standard approach on system boundaries and definitions of food waste • Developing, testing and describing standardised reporting methodologies to improve quantification of food waste • Developing criteria for the assessment of socio-economic & environmental impacts of food waste and providing baseline estimates

WP2: Objectives • Establish a European FUSIONS Multi-stakeholder Platform with an appropriate tiered platform management structure, that enables it to last beyond the project timeframe. • Organise a feedback and consensus building process to exchange ideas and suggestions to reduce food waste, and receive input from all other WPs and maximise output to the other WPs.

WP3: Objectives • Comprehensively mapping and analysing the current legislation and policies which impact the creation of food waste in the EU/EEA countries and evaluating the main trends of food waste generation • Identifying sound measures and best practice for an improved legislation to reduce food waste through social innovation • Establishing indicators and criteria to develop a specific evaluation framework for food waste policies • Designing guidelines and recommendations for a European Common Policy targeting prevention and reduction of food waste through socially innovative measures

Key messages cutting food wastage Based also on non-FUSIONS results: • Public–private collaboration is the best way to approach a complex societal issue: global food & nutrition security as main driver • To establish a coherence of EU-policies is crucial (sustainable food consumption, food safety, bioenergy, waste directive, resource efficiency, competitiveness & inclusive growth) • Prevention of consumer food waste should have priority in policies • Solutions to improve the whole supply chain, based on closed loop supply chain paradigm have the highest improvement potential

Public-private Systems Approach • Reduce Food waste and improved valorization is of great importance for a resource efficient, sustainable and resilient global food system • Industry priorities the topic of food waste reduction and valorization. Don’t waste this opportunity to develop a public-private collaboration for a systems approach. • Increasing competitiveness of the European food and drink industry, while at the same time reducing the environmental impacts are crucial preconditions for inclusive growth at European level. • Investment in Research and Innovation is essential !
