  2. “Hip-hop is the voice of this generation. Even if you didn't grow up in the Bronx in the '70s, hip-hop is there for you. It has become a powerful force. Hip-hop binds all of these people, all of these nationalities, all over the world together.” – DJ KoolHerc In 1959 Parks Commissioner Robert Moses began building an expressway through the heart of the Bronx. The middle class neighbourhood of different races began to disappear. This caused the poorer Black and Hispanic families to move into the society. All sources seem to point to the Bronx in ‘The Big Apple’, New York City as the origin for the hip hop culture. This brought activity in drugs, crime and unemployment. The Bronx in this deteriorating condition fell prey to the third major event which led to the direct development of the graffiti aspect of the Hip Hop culture. A group of seven teenagers were one of the main movements for the hip hop culture, back in 1968, as they terrorized the Bronx and later became known as the Savage Seven due to the increase in members. Their influence overwhelmed the Bronx for the next 6 years.

The Emergence of Hip Hop The emergence of Hip Hop started from ‘Block Parties’ which were thrown by people who owned loud and expensive equipment to be shared with the community. ‘Kool DJ Herc’ was one of the most notable people who began isolating the percussion break from funk or disco songs.
