Campus Theory of Action There is growing evidence that schools on campuses improve when principals change their solo behaviors into campus teams that learn.
What is Team Learning? “Team learning is the collaborative process of aligning and developing the capacity of a team to create the results its members truly desire.” Peter Senge • Well-executed campus management creates necessary • conditions for increased student achievement, as well as • principal, staff and community satisfaction. They create and • actively participate in a Building Council, a structure for • administrative decision making for issues impacting all the • schools in the building.
Communication Best Practices for Campus Governance: Building Council • Are equal partners in shaping the educational environment; • Share responsibility and accountability for administration communicating and culture • Establish ground truth data through common formulas for shared space • Create compelling shared values and visions for the management of the campus • Balance their school’s autonomy with campus collaboration to assure an engaging campus to student, teacher and parent users • Distribute the leadership of campus management tasks and assure equitable access • Build consensus for common initiative through dialogue and communication Building Council Members:
Leaders on high functioning campuses have attributed their success to the following:All members: • Take responsibility for the safety, achievement and social/emotional development of all the students on the campus regardless of school • Meet regularly with an agenda, record and share minutes • Engage in unfiltered conflict around ideas and resolve them through consensus. Do not need outside parties to mediate conflicts. • Commit to decisions and plan of actions and hold one another accountable, in a collegial a respectful way for delivering to those plans. • Speak with “one voice” externally to staff and community towards building positive community relations not for individual schools but for the campus on a whole. • Share best practices in teaching & learning towards positive student outcomes for all students
