American foreign policy How it has changed over time
Washington’s Farewell Address • Washington stepped down from office after 8 years of serving • In his farewell speech he urged the country to do 2 things • Stay Neutral • Avoid Sectionalism (Loyalty to one section of a country instead of the entire country)
War of 1812 • Proved to the world that the United States could defend itself against the mightiest militarypower of the time. • Many Americans now believed that the country would survive and prosper.
Monroe Doctrine • Monroe said that the Americas were closed to further colonization. He also warned that any European efforts to reestablish colonies would be considered “dangerous to our(American) peace and safety.” • The Monroe Doctrine became important part of U.S. foreign policy. • It was used to justify many U.S. actions in the Western Hemisphere.
Tradition of Isolationism • Belief that the United States should stay out of other nation’s affairs except in matters of self-defense.
