GrammarThe comparative and the superlative Learning objectives: • To know how to make comparative and superlative using adjectives in Arabic • To compare the different news media using the comparative and the superlative pattern Mrs Aitelhawa
How to make comparative in Arabic أكثر كثير أصغر صغير أشهر شهير Arabic has a method in forming the comparative. Arabic forms comparative as follows : Basic adjectives: There is a pattern in Arabic called af ع al which is used with short basic adjectives, it is made up of three root letters. To change an adjective to comparative you have to add an Alif before the first root letter and fatha between the second and third as shown in the examples above. Some adjectives even they are very short they are made a little bit differently. They still keep same second and third root with slight change. They are written in the comparative with fatha moving after the first root. Look at thes 2 examples: أجد جديد شديد أشد Mrs Aitelhawa
Some adjectives follow the same rule with slight changes to the comparative. If these adjectives end with ي or و,this changes to alif maqsura ‘ى’ at the end of the comparative. Look at these two examples: أغنى غني أحلى حلو Mrs Aitelhawa
How to make superlative in Arabic • Longer adjectives in Arabic cannot change into comparative using the af ع al pattern. In this case akthar أكثر(more) is used with a noun that should carry tanween alfatha at the end. Example إفادةً أكثر إفادةً انتشاراً أكثر انتشاراً ملائمةً أكثر ملائمةً Mrs Aitelhawa
Another way of making the superlative • Also another way of making the superlative in Arabic to express the ‘fastest’ or ‘the most beautiful’ is either to put the comparative in front of the noun. Example: • أجمل مدينة • أقدم سيارة Or simply to add the article ‘al- ال’ to the comparative with the meaning of ‘the fastest one’ • أسرع الأسرع • أقدم الأقدم Mrs Aitelhawa
