  1. Sarah – Mother of Israel

  2. Genesis 12:1-3, 7 • The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring (seed) I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

  3. Genesis 13:14-17 • The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring [a] forever. I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you."

  4. God’s Promise toAbraham & Sarah • Seed • an heir to inherit Abraham's wealth • descendants "as numerous as the stars" (GEN 15:5) and "as numerous as the grains of sand" (GEN 22:23) • a "seed" in whom all the nations would be blessed (GEN 22:18) *this would be fulfilled in Jesus Christ • Land - Canaan

  5. Genesis. 11:30 • Now Sarai was barren; she had no children.

  6. ABRAHAM’S RESPONSE • Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, "Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?“ (Genesis 17:17)

  7. SARAH’S RESPONSE • Then the LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son. "Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?" (Genesis 18:10-12)

  8. Genesis 16:1-5 • Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar; so she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her." Abram agreed to what Sarai said. So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my servant in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me."

  9. Genesis 21:1-7 • Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me." And she added, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."

  10. SARAH: HER CHARACTER • Scripture declares that she was beautiful. • Genesis 12:11 As he [Abraham] was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, "I know what a beautiful woman you are. • Genesis 12:14 When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that she was a very beautiful woman. • She could be strong willed and jealous • This is exemplified in her taking matters into her own hands and telling Abraham to sleep with Hagar so that she could bear a child to fulfill God’s promise.

  11. SARAH: HER CHARACTER • She was considered a loyal wife. • She was submissive towards Abraham • when God called Abram to leave Ur Sarai accompanied him • when Abram left Canaan to sojourn in Egypt Sarai again went with him (GEN 12:10,11) • when Abram left Egypt Sarai accompanied him (GEN 13:1) • She was obedient to Abraham • when Abram asked her to tell the Egyptians that he was her brother she obeyed (GEN 12:13) • when company came she prepared food as she was commanded (GEN 18:6) • when Abraham again asked her to lie about their marriage to Abimelech, the Philistine, she did (GEN 20:5)

  12. SARAH: HER SORROW • That she remained childless for most of her life

  13. SARAH: HER JOY • She was blessed by God (Gen. 17:16) • At age ninety, she gave birth to Isaac, child of promise.

  14. WHAT’S IN A NAME? • Isaac – he laughs • Sarai – Argumentative, contentious • Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife. (Proverbs 21:9)

  15. Genesis 17:15-16 • God also said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her."

  16. WHAT’S IN A NAME? • Sarah – Princess • a female member of a royal family other than the queen (especially the daughter of a sovereign)

  17. WHAT CAN WE LEARN? • We do not have to "feel" like obeying to obey: it is a matter of the will. • Obedience is pleasing to God. • But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD ? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. (1 Samuel 15:22 )

  18. WHAT CAN WE LEARN? • When we take matters into our own hands we mess things up! • There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. (Proverbs 14:12 ) • God has a plan for your life • For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)

  19. WHAT CAN WE LEARN? • We need to wait on God to fulfill His promises. • But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)

  20. WHAT CAN WE LEARN? • God has given you a new name (His grace defines you). • We are his “treasured possessions (Exodus 19:5; Malachi 3:17), the “people of His inheritance” ( Deut. 4:20), and “sons of the living God (Hosea 1:10). We are His “friends (John 15:15), • No mater what name you were given, God knows it. In love, he calls you to him by your name, and you belong to Him. (Isaiah 43:1)
