  2. Present progressive tense • To emphasize that the action is in progress at the time of speaking. • It is formed with the present tense of ESTAR and the present participle* of the main verb. Estoy estudiando (I am studying) *(also called gerund or -ndo form).

  3. Present Participle (PrP) • Formed by… dropping the -ar, -er, or -ir ending of the verb + adding -ando for -ar verbs, -iendo for -er & -ir

  4. PrP of regular verbs • hablar habl- + -ando hablando • comer com- + -iendo comiendo • salir sal- + -iendo saliendo

  5. PrP of stem-changing verbs • Ending in -ar & -er ... regular PrP forms (NO stem change) cerrar (e:ie) cerrando volver (o:ue) volviendo

  6. PrP of stem-changing verbs • Ending in -ir … irregular forms. e > i sentir (e:ie) > sintiendo pedir (e:i) > pidiendo o > u dormir (o:ue) > durmiendo

  7. Irregular PrP • -er & -ir: If the stem ends in a vowel ... add -yendo leer le-yendo construir constru-yendo

  8. Adverbs or phrases associated with the present progressive tense • En este momento En este momento estamos estudiando español. • Ahora ¡Ahora estoy hablandoyo! • Ahora mismo Ahora mismo estoy hablando con mis estudiantes.
