  3. Facts • About 5% of students missed 1+ day of school because they felt unsafe • Hispanic and Black students were more likely to feel unsafe than White students • In recent years… fewer violent death events, but more deaths per event

  4. Deadliest shooting in U.S. history: Virginia Tech in April 2007 • Cho Seung-Hui killed 32 students and faculty • Risk of a violent death: 1 in 2 million

  5. LGBT Students • LGBT youth endure verbal and physical harassment • 82% surveyed were harassed in school • This negatively affected their: • School attendance • Academic performance • College aspirations

  6. Social Action • Prevention, planning, and preparation • Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP) • Social and emotional research based K-12 school program • In 400 schools nationwide • Belief: Aggression and violent behaviors are learned therefore they can be reduced through education

GSA • Gay-Straight Alliance • East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1995 • School board banned it, but club continued to meet • Both gay and straight members reported positive impact on their lives, safe refuge • Decrease in: feeling of isolation, vulnerability, substance abuse, depression, suicidal impulses, and truancy • September of 2000, School Board of Education reversed their 1995 decision, allowing GSA to meet • Now: 4,000+ registered LGBT clubs in U.S.
