  2. Michael Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15th, 1929 to schoolteacher, Alberta King and minister, Michael King. • Michael Luther King lived at 501 Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia. • His father later changed both their • names to Martin Luther King.

  3. Martin liked school and studied hard. He listened to his teachers and did his homework. • He was good at reading and speaking. • His family sent him to a special school. School

  4. Church was very important to Martin. He spent a lot of time at church. • At church he learned that it was possible • for people to get along together. • He also learned that everyone • should be treated fairly. Church

  5. College • King entered Morehouse College at the age of 15 and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology. • He graduated from Seminary in 1954. • Seminary is a school • that prepares students for • ordination as clergy or for • other ministry. Morehouse College

  6. On June 18th, 1953, when Martin was 25 years old, he married Coretta Scott. • They moved to Montgomery, Alabama where he got a job preaching in a small church.

  7. In Alabama there were many laws that were unfair. • Martin and his friends wanted to change these unfair laws. • King was selected as president of the Montgomery Improvement Association. Unfair Laws

The Civil Rights Movement • Did you know that in the 1950's Blacks weren't allowed to eat in the same restaurants as Whites? • They weren't allowed to drink out of the same drinking fountains as Whites, and often weren't allowed to vote. • Although slaves were freed at the end of the Civil War, they didn't get treated the same as Whites.

December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks took a stand for her race by refusing to give her seat to a white passenger. • This was the catalyst for beginning the Civil Rights Movement. • As president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, Dr. King was responsible for the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott that lasted 381 days.   11. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. began to establish himself as the national leader of the civil rights movement. • He led many non-violent boycotts and protests • against segregation in the South. Civil Rights leader

  12. On August, 28th, 1963, Martin • Luther King Jr. organized a • “March on Washington, D.C.” March on Washington

  13. King spoke to 250,000 civil rights supporters in front of the Washington Monument. March on Washington

  14. Dr. King gave a famous speech called “I Have A Dream”. March on Washington

  17. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill to make January 20th, the celebration of Dr. King’s birthday, a national holiday. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

  18. Why do we celebrate his birthday? We celebrate his birthday each year because he worked hard to make his dream of peace come true! Dr. King was a leader in the civil rights movement. He gave many speeches to help promote peace and equal treatment for all people.
