Create a brace map showing different types of non violent protest and their effects? • What are the similarities and differences between the ideas and tactics of Martin Luther King/the SNCC and Malcolm X /the Nations of Islam? Create a Venn Diagram to compare differences and similarities

  3. JFK • Robert Kennedy helped MLK • JFK gained support from African American voters helping him to win Election • JFK did not want to upset Southern Democrats with issues over Civil Rights, much like Truman

  4. Freedom Rides • Interstates Busses and Public facilities • Black in front, whites in back • Violence • JFK sends federal marshals for protection • Success

  5. Birmingham • Segregation in Birmingham, AL • Bull Connor = Violence • MLK arrested, Letter from a Birmingham Jail • SCLC recruit children(mostly teenagers) • Dogs, fire hoses, and television

  6. March on Washington • Protest at Lincoln Memorial, why there? • 250,000 people, from all over the country • “I have a Dream” • JFK promised to support Civil Rights

  7. A Loss and a Gain • JFK assassinated Nov. 22, 1963 • Country saddened, Brainpop • Lyndon Johnson becomes President • Promises to continue JFK’s wishes • Civil Rights Act of 1964

  8. Voting • Freedom Summer-White college student helping w/voter registration in Mississippi • Violence • Selma March to Montgomery • State Troopers, horses, and TV • Johnson involved • Voting Rights Act
