  4. Farmers • Improved farm machinery & fertilizers • Increased crop prices • Crop production rose • Farm income increased • Farmers could now afford to pay off mortgages

  5. Women & Minorities • Women entered the workforce in record #s • Forced out after WWII • Minorities were offered more challenging jobs • Women & minorities were offered better pay

  6. Population shifts Population Centers, Housing

  7. Population Centers • Population of states, cities, & towns with military bases & defense industries dramatically increased • Examples: • Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Michigan, Florida, & Pacific Coast state

  8. Housing • Population booms led to acute housing shortage • Despite having money, workers couldn’t find places to live—forced to camp out • Faced food shortages also

  9. Social adjustments Family Life, Returning GIs

  10. Family Life • Women juggled work & family • Women raised children alone • Marriage rate increased • Steep increase in the divorce rate

  11. Returning GIs • Standard of living increased with the passage of the GI Bill of Rights Provided… • Free education • Job training • Guaranteed federal loans—for homes, businesses, & farms

  12. Discrimination & reaction African Americans, Mexican Americans, Japanese Americans

  13. African Americans • Defended U.S. by working in factories & joining military • Founded CORE • Congress of Racial Equality • Staged sit-ins • Created committees to improve race relations

  14. Mexican Americans • Defended U.S. by joining the military • Zoot Suit Rebellion against tradition

  15. Japanese Americans • Defended U.S. by joining the military • Fought against forced relocation • Founded JACL • Japanese Americans Citizens League • Sought compensation for those forced into internment camps
