Some Background Info • Rivalry against the “Greasers” and the “Socs” (short for “socials”) • Divided by socioeconomic status (social classes) -“Greasers” are poor, teenage boys who wear torn up jeans and t-shirts -“Socs” are wealthy, teenage boys who dress in khakis and button downs One of the many rumbles (fights) between the two groups.   7. -Represents disregard for authority; which Greasers pride themselves for -Individual power that comes with the potential to commit a crime -When the blade is lost, it is showing that individual power and authority are no longer a part of the Greasers; think about how this relates to Dally’s death!   8. -Represents the Socs power and the Greasers’ vulnerability -Socs are protected by cars and have great mobility while Greasers are at a disadvantage on foot -Greasers don’t own/drive such cars, they repair them -Positive: more direct and well-experience with realities of life -Negative: the fact that they are servicing Socs cars gives Socs power to opress them Symbols

  9. Bob’s Rings -Traditional symbol for wealth -Represents physical power -Used for combative weapons; taking advantage of economic superiority -use of wealth to injure his opponents Symbols

Greasers’ Hair Style -Because Greasers can’t afford cars or rings, their hair is the most affordable way to mark their identity -Distinguishes them from other social groups -Rebellion against cultural values; men's hair was supposed to be short (In the story, when the Socs jump Ponyboy they ask if he wants a hair cut; thus robbing his identity) Symbols

  11. “Nothing Gold Can Stay” By: Robert Frost Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. Main Menu!
