What is the absolute value of -4? How many jumps from zero is -4? Watch the frog and count. -4 is 4 jumps from zero also. So the absolute value of -4 is 4. 4 and -4 have the same absolute value! They are both 4 hops from zero, so their absolute value equals 4.
The two straight vertical lines on either side of the number mean “absolute value”. To read this we say “absolute value of -4 is 4”. It means that -4 is 4 hops away from zero.
