  2. Absolute Value…..a scary word with an easy meaning. Let’s examine the absolute value of 4. Absolute value is how far a number is from zero. How many jumps from zero is 4? Count the frog’s jumps to see. The frog was 4 jumps from zero, so the absolute value of 4 is 4.

  3. What is the absolute value of -4? How many jumps from zero is -4? Watch the frog and count. -4 is 4 jumps from zero also. So the absolute value of -4 is 4. 4 and -4 have the same absolute value! They are both 4 hops from zero, so their absolute value equals 4.

  4. The two straight vertical lines on either side of the number mean “absolute value”. To read this we say “absolute value of -4 is 4”. It means that -4 is 4 hops away from zero.
