Vocabulary • Absolute Value- the number’s distance from 0 on the number line. • Example: The absolute value of -3 is 3 because -3 is 3 units from 0. The absolute value of -3 is written |-3|
Real World Example • The altitude of an airplane changed by -50 feet in a minute while preparing to land at Midway Airport. How many feet did the airplane travel during the minute?
Real World Example The balance on Ms. Seweryn’s credit card statement is listed as -$125. What is the amount of her debt to the credit card company?

Absolute Value Game- Memory! • Rules: • Work with a partner. • When you have your cards, place all cards face down on desk. • Pick up a card. Try and find the card that has the matching absolute value as the card in your hand. • If the card you pick up is not the match, flip both cards over and place back on desk. • Take turns and continue until all pairs are found. • Whoever has the most pairs at the end of the game is the winner!
