  2. Essential Question How are world climates and biomes organized?

  3. Biome: is an ecological community defined by distinctive plant and animal groups

  4. Natural Vegetation: plant life that grows in a certain area if people have not changed the natural environment

  5. Average Daily Temperature: the average of the daily high temp and overnight low

  6. The world is organized into four climate zones: • tropical • dry • Multi-latitude • high-latitude

  7. Tropical • hot avg. temp 80 • avg. 80 inches of rain per year

  8. Dry • Less than 10 inches of rain per yr. • Hot or Cold

  9. Oasis: small area in a desert where water and vegetation are found.

  10. Mid-latitudes • Large variety in temperature • Northern Hemisphere • Four Seasons

  11. Prairie: an inland grassland area

  12. Deciduous: falling off or shed seasonally; trees such as oak and maple

  13. High-latitudes • Not much rain, 16 inches avg. per yr. • Cold Winters • Cannot support a productive agriculture

  14. Coniferous: vegetation having cones and needle shaped leaves, including many evergreens, that keep their foliage throughout the winter

  15. Permafrost: permanently frozen layer of soil beneath the surface of the ground
