Energy Forms And Transformations!
What is it? Energy is the ability to do work. Work is moving any object.
Law of Conservation of Energy. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can transform from one form to another.
Forms of Energy Just remember MELTS + C Mechanical Electrical Light Thermal Sound Chemical
Mechanical Energy • Mechanical energy is the energy associated with the motion or movement of an object. • Examples: a frog leaping, a car moving
Electrical Energy • Electrical energy is energy associated with moving electriccharges. • Example: energy in power lines, or devices that use electrical energy to power them
Light Energy Movement of light waves. What examples do you see?
Thermal Energy • Thermal (or heat) energy is a measure of the energy of the movement of particles (molecules) in an object. • Example: ice cream melting, frying an egg
Sound Energy What examples do you see? Movement of sound waves.
Chemical Energy • Produced through a chemical reaction. • Ex. the food you eat, gasoline, batteries
Battery • Batteriesare all over the place -- in our cars, our PCs, laptops, portable MP3 players and cell phones. A battery is essentially a can full of chemicals that produce electrons.
3-2-1 • Respond to the following: • 3 – 3 things in the room that have electrical energy at the moment • 2 – 2 things in the room that have light energy at the moment • 1 – 1 question you still have about forms of energy.
Transformations Between Forms of Energy • A change from one form of energy to another is called an energy transformation. • Example: a toaster converts electrical energy into thermal energy
Energy Transformation • Playing an instrument involves: having the energy in your body > moving your fingers > creating sound. CHEMICAL (through digestion) > MECHANICAL (muscles) > SOUND
Transformations Between Forms of Energy • How is the energy transforming? ________ ________
