  2. Starter Activity • Write down 10 words that you would use to describe yourself. • What do you think personality is? • Think of a time when you have acted ‘out of character’. Why did you behave like this?

A definition? • Personality is difficult to define • May depend on a particular approach e.g. psychodynamic • ‘…those relatively stable & enduring aspects of individuals which distinguish them from other people, making them unique, but which at the same time allow people to be compared with each other.’ (Gross, 2001)

  4. What is Multiple Personality Disorder? It is NOT schizophrenia Also called • Dissociative IdentityDisorder (DID).

  5. Definition • The occurrence of two or more personalities within the same individual, each of which is able to take control sometime in the person’s life. (Banyard & Flanagan 2008).

  6. Each personality has Own Cognitive functioning Own social relationships PERSONALITY Individual Behaviour patterns Distinct memories

  7. Controversial • One view suggests that MPD is real & a response to childhood sexual abuse • Another view suggests that MPD is created in the therapist’s office by the use of hypnotism & guided imagery.

  8. ACTIVITY Work in groups of 2 Read the case studies you have been given Complete the grid in your booklet

  9. Jigsaw activity • In your new groups complete the hand out for the study
