Emulsion quality N. Naganawa, K. Hoshino Thanks to all the OPERA colleagues who are engaged on handling and developing emulsion.
Problems developing Sticking to the next(max 2/brick, normally 0-1/brick) Dust Large amount of fog, or less GD(potential) thickening Water (glycerin solution) drops (by lack of driwel) Thickness (potential) shipping Mark by shipping
Development Films sticking to the next film 1 observation by eyes when in presoak and move those films which are bending in opposite way from other films to the empty place of the rack. (this seems difficult…especially when there are a lot of films like this) 2 Half brick/rack development to increase the distance between emulsion. (Is this realistic comparing to the processing capacity of developing facility at LNGS?) Dust…(solved? It was water/tank problem.) Solution check after making them. develop a test film after making solution (and see cosmic ray track) to avoid fatal error.
thickness At LNGS… Before processing… Checking of solution Density (by 100ml pycnometer+- 0.2g) Driwel (put film in and see if water falls off well /see bubble appears when with it.) After processing… Avoid sticking Water drop checking…( if there, re-washing, re-thickening) Weight check (= thickness check) of emulsion. At each scanning lab Thickness measurement of films by measuring their weight. (By using the following relation between thickness and weight.) Re-thickening
Re-thickening If unexpected errors at LNGS Wiping with alcohol (or dried cloth??) (or films which are several months After processing at LNGS) … thickness are different Good for efficiency and distortion(…data coming).
Vol (gly) + Vol (gel) + Vol (water) = Wei (gly) + Wei (gel) + Wei (water) In … % error
Weight checking (relation between thickness and weight) 1.4 % == 1 micron == 21 mg??
Equipments for re-thickening Rack Tank washing (stirring, tap, 1, 2) Gly+water+driwel
How to know the finish of re-thickening Speed of thickening varies by history of emulsion, temperature of thickener, Measuring thickness of film in the thickener and wait until it becomes proper. Thickness in the thickener
Shipping (film separators) Teflon (Current)
Conductive material (Hoshinosan’s test) 11days sandwiched between conductive PE sheets black (no reflection) was better
