6. The Protestant Reformation Europe 1517 – c. 1650

7. 1. What was the Reformation? The Reformation – the movement to reform (change)the Christian church in Western Europe. “Reform” = To change for the better.

8. During the Middle Ages, the Catholic church had much power. It developed several practices that angered some catholic thinkers including the sale of indulgences: Indulgences: Certificates that a person could buy from the church that released them from their sins. The church made money by selling these indulgences. 2. Corruption in the Catholic Church during the Middle Ages:

9. 3. Indulgences for the dead People would often buy indulgences to free their dead family members from purgatory (the place between heaven and hell)

10. This picture shows a poor woman paying money to a Clergyman for an indulgence. In the movie Luther, Martin Luther becomes angry at the thought of poor people paying money for a worthless piece of paper. Indulgences

Other problems in the church: • Immoral and ignorant priests / clergy (ministers) - Many clergy often broke their vows; they were rich (breaking the vow of poverty), they had children (breaking the vow of chastity), and abused their power - Many clergy could not read, so they did not know the Bible personally. They were supposed to be teaching the people, but they were ignorant about the teachings and beliefs of Christianity.

12. Enormous wealth of the Catholic church • The Church was one of the richest institutions in Europe during the Middle Ages and it paid no taxes. - Most people were very poor in the Middle Ages - The Church still required people to give it money.

13. Martin Luther was a Catholic monk who disagreed with the corrupt Church teachings and practices. On October 31 1517, Luther posted 95 Theses (arguments) on the door of the castle church in Wittenberg. These theses outlined Luther’s disagreements with the Church. Martin Luther Because he spoke out against the church, Martin Luther was called a heretic (A threat against the church) • Luther’s followers, and other Christians who disagreed with the Catholic Church formed the branch of Christianity known as PROTESTantism. This is because they PROTESTED some practices of the Catholic church.

18. 95 Theses • How do you think the average person reacted to the church prior to the posting of the 95 Theses? • After the 95 Theses were posted, how do you think the church reacted? Do you think they changed their practices? If you were an official in the church, how would you have defended your actions? • Luther did not intend to create a new branch of Christianity, but soon his followers began establish churches of their own following his ideals. What has been the result of this division within Christianity? Where have we seen it before? Do you think this divide has been a good thing or a bad thing? • What is your opinion of the 95 Theses?

19. Interview! • Create an interview of Martin Luther in your notebook for a German Newspaper during the Reformation. • Interviews should include 10 questions related to his beliefs and problems with the Catholic Church. • Responses should be at least a sentence or more in length.

Church Today • Do different denomination churches in Charlotte ever get into debates or arguments with one another? • Do churches or religious groups work together on projects or events? • Do churches or religious groups try to get people to join their particular church? • Be sure to take time to share out as a class.
