  2. 1. Abner will pay with his life! 2. David will become king over all of Israel. II. 2SAMUEL 3:1 A. Ishbosheth reigning in Saul’s place.

  3. 1. Ishbosheth reigned a total of 7 years. • a) The “long war” = a 5 year period of time! • (1) David winning the skirmishes. • (2) Many defecting to David’s side. • III. 2SAMUEL 3:2-6

  4. A. David begins his family with his several wives! • 1. Abner working his way up in strength and power! • a) At least he thinks he is. • IV. 2SAMUEL 3:7-11

  5. A. If Abner was guilty we are not told. 1. Safe to assume that he was! 2. Such an act would be punishable by death! a) Felt he should not have even been questioned about this!

  6. b) Not a good move for Ishbosheth! • V. 2SAMUEL 3:12-16 • A. I find this to be quite sad! • 1. Michal given to Paltiel and he loved her. • 2. Sad for Paltiel!

  7. B. Abner defects to David. • VI. 2SAMUEL 3:17-21 • A. Abner rallying troops to David’s side. • 1. He has David’s blessing and sends him away.

  8. VII. 2SAMUEL 3:22-23 • A. Reinforce what we learned about “sins of the tongue”! • 1. What “THEY” told Joab was the truth! • a) Something true – doesn’t need to be said.

  9. b) How do you think he is going to react? • VIII. 2SAMUEL 3:24-27 • A. Abner does not know the intent of his heart. • 1. Hatred clouded his judgment.

  10. IX. 2SAMUEL 3:28-39 • A. King David makes it clear this was not his idea! • 1. Verse 39 • a) Joab and Abishai were men of power.

  11. b) Had he acted against them – would have been destructive! • c) Would have divided his kingdom. • (1) He says, I am weak today. • (a) Like saying – “My hands are tied!”

  12. (b) Even as king – I am powerless • (c) He turns it over to the Lord! • X. CONCLUSION • A. 2Samuel 4:1-12
