Research • Research starts with a question. • My question: What color of hair is associated with a higher IQ? • Hypothesis- a testable prediction about what you expect to happen. • A theory predicts behavior, while a hypothesis makes a prediction. • My hypothesis: People with blonde hair have higher IQs. ;)
Variables • Variable- something that is measured. • Independent Variable- the variable you manipulate; ex: hair color (blonde, brown, red, black) • Dependent Variable- the variable you measure; ex: IQ score
Relationships Between Variables • Causal Relationships- when one variable causes a change in another another variable; ex: dying your hair blonde will make you smarter. • Very uncommon, things are rarely this black and white. • Correlational Relationships- one variable is associated with another variable; ex: people with blonde hair tend to have higher IQs. • CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION.
Observation and Data Collection • Time to make observations!Count how many times the players in white pass the ball. • http://youtu.be/IGQmdoK_ZfY • What’s the matter with making observations?
Basic Psychological Ethics • Informed Consent • Debrief • Protection of Participants from Mental or Physical Harm • Deception • Confidentiality • Right to Leave
The Milgram Experiment • http://youtu.be/pdb20gcc_Ns • What ethical violations can you think of?
Other Unethical Studies • Stanford Prison Experiment • Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment
Tonight’s Reflection:What ethical violations were committed during the studies we discussed today? What are your thoughts? Could these experiments be done today?
