You will learn more than you have in your entire 8 years of English combined. I guarantee it. Ask any of the 8th graders from last year (yes, even the boys), and they will still be able classify any sentence you put in front of them. BOOM! Take that, learning! • Statistics prove that scholars between the ages of 7 and 15 learn best through music. (Hence why even if I haven’t heard that awesome Backstreet Boys or Spice Girl song in a decade, I still can belt out all the words if it comes on the radio. • No more textbook nonsense! English books are boring; I will be the first to admit it. Having you guys read out of the book and then do sentences, and then read from the book, and then do sentences, and then read from the book, and then do sentences… well, you get the idea. It’s monotonous (look it up) and most of you don’t learn from it anyway. This is our chance to break away from the norm and actually learn in English class. Plus, it is one less book you have to shove in your locker. Why would we do such a thing?
For the first part of the series, I am going to introduce several concepts that should already be familiar to you. The Four Kinds of Sentences and the End Mark Flow A declarative sentence makes a statement. It is labeled with a D. Example: I walked my dog yesterday. (Period, statement, declarative sentence) An imperative sentence gives a command. It is labeled with an Imp. Example: Close the door. (Period, command, imperative sentence) An interrogative sentence asks a question. It is labeled with an Int. Example: Do you live here? (Question mark, question, interrogative sentence) An exclamatory sentence expresses strong feeling. It is labeled with an E. Example: The field is on fire! (Exclamation point, strong feeling, exclamatory sentence)
