  2. Where is Dukes Barn? Dukes BarnSchool Rd, Beeley, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 2NU Dukes Barn is an Outdoor Activity Centre, based in Beeley, in the heart of the Peak District National Park and the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. It is one mile away from Chatsworth House. It is a non-profit making charity organisation that provides group accommodation and outdoor adventure activities for young people of all abilities. The activities take place at different locations around the Peak District.

Why are we going? • Exciting activities • Meeting personal challenges • Developing an awareness of the needs of others – team work! • Gaining a wider appreciation of the natural environment • Primary Curriculum- PE • Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success. • Pupils should be taught to: • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team

Primary Curriculum- Geography compare different places study a range of places and environments in different parts of the world, including the United Kingdom • Primary Curriculum- Personal, Social and Health Education • to work collaboratively towards shared goals • Personal effectiveness: • Self-improvement (including through constructive self-reflection, seeking and utilising constructive feedback and effective goal-setting) • Resilience (including self-motivation, perseverance and adaptability) • Developing and maintaining a healthy self-concept • Interpersonal and social effectiveness • Empathy and compassion (including impact on decision-making and behaviour) • Respect for others’ right to their own beliefs, values and opinions

  5. What is it like at Dukes Barn? Games Room Dukes Barn has a games room with pool table, table tennis, table football and a large meeting room. There’s a dining room where the food is served. There is a drying room for wet clothing. There are separate bedrooms, toilets and showers for boys, girls and staff. Within the grounds there is a field and all weather surface suitable for 5 a side football, basket ball or similar games. For activity courses there is a new indoor climbing wall and a ropes course and tunnels. There are quiet areas too. Outdoor Play Area The Barn

  7. What do we do at Dukes Barn? This exciting challenge takes place at Miller’s Dale. Pupils abseil down an old railway bridge. Abseiling

  8. Stream Scrambling Stream scrambling is a popular activity with children. It is a fun activity. Groups follow a stream valley, scrambling over rocks and boulders, splashing through pools and getting wet meeting fun challenges set by the instructors.

  9. Weaseling This is an ideal introduction to mountain activities, involving a mixture of all the skills utilised in walking, climbing and caving. These are active sessions and are an ideal activity for young energetic groups.

  10. The lake at Chatsworth House provides a perfect environment to enjoy a session on flat water, learning skills and playing fun games to build confidence Canoeing

  11. Caving is a great group experience where children meet different challenges and learn about the history of mining in Derbyshire. A typical half day will involve up to two and a half hours underground, experiencing these unique exciting environments. The “caves” are lead mines and are “dry”. Caving

  12. Ropes Course Dukes Barns ropes course offers a challenging venue for problem solving and team challenges. It has been designed to enable people of different abilities to work together and have fun. There is also a brand new indoor climbing wall to learn new skills.

  13. What do I need to take? Clothing: Old Clothes! Do not spend lots of money on brand new clothing! T - Shirts Jeans / jogging bottoms / tracksuit Warm sweater/ hoodie / fleece Trainers / comfortable footwear (2 pairs) Warm coat / jacket Swimwear Towels Hat / scarf / gloves  Wellies (these can also be borrowed at Dukes Barn) Underwear Socks (One pair per day, plus spares) Pyjamas Dressing Gown Slippers/Indoor Shoes

  14. Food Pupils will need to take their own packed lunch and their water bottles for the first day. The staff at Dukes Barn prepare all other meals. (You order the food you would like the day before…) Breakfast- choice of cooked breakfast, toast, cereal, lots to choose from! Lunch- Children have packed lunches sometimes eating them away from Dukes Barn. There’s a choice of sandwiches, crisps, fruit and cake. Evening meal- Hot home made food and pudding (They know the kind of food that children like!) Nobody is made to eat food they don’t like! Nobody goes hungry!

  15. When do we go? Dukes Barn has been booked from Monday 23rd April to Wednesday 25th April We will leave school by 10 o’clock on the Monday and return for home-time on the Wednesday. What happens when we get there? Monday Arrive 12.00- Packed Lunch brought from home Activities: 3 groups go out to do different activities- weaseling, canoeing, abseiling… Return to the Barn- outdoor games (if time) complete unpacking, bed making, etc. Tea- 6 o’clock. Order food for next day. Games room, diary writing, showers, etc. Bed time?

  16. Tuesday Breakfast Collect equipment for next activity Activity 2: The 3 groups go out to do different activities. Return to the Barn for lunch or eat on location… Activity 3: The 3 groups go out to do different activities. Outdoor games Tea- 6 o’clock. Order food for next day. Games room, diary writing, showers, etc. DVD? Bed time Wednesday Pack up and clear the rooms. Breakfast Collect equipment for next activity 3 groups go out to do different activities. Return to barn for lunch. Leave 1.30pm Return to Corringham for 3.15pm

  17. How much does it cost? Although we will be at Dukes Barn for 3 days and 2 nights, we will pay for 2 whole days. The cost for each child is £73.50 per day. This covers food, accommodation, transport to the activities and all activities. We will also have to pay for the transport to and from Corringham. The total cost will be £165 A deposit of £50 is required for each child. A good way to pay is in regular instalments rather than all in one go! £50 + £25 + £25 + £25 + £25 + £15

  18. Who is going to Dukes Barn? All pupils in the Owls Class are invited to go to Dukes Barn. We would also like to give the four Y6 pupils from Willoughton School the opportunity to join us. However: • It is essential that the behaviour of all pupils is of a high standard. • If the staff believe that the behaviour of a child puts him/her or other children in danger, then they will not be allowed to go to Dukes Barn. • Pupils must be excellent listeners and be very supportive of each other.
