  8. 2019 Rules of Golf Relaxed Rules Changes • No penalty for accidental movement of ball on the putting green and during search • No penalty if your ball hits a player or equipment after a stroke • No penalty for accidentally striking the ball more than once

  9. 2019 Rules of Golf Notable Changes • Damaged clubs during the round – a player may keep using any damaged club, no matter the nature or cause of damage • Damaged clubs – a player may not replace a damaged club, unless the player was not responsible for the damage

  10. 2019 Rules of Golf Notable Changes • Caddie may lift the ball without authorization on the putting green • Substituting a ball – a player may always substitute a ball when taking relief • Embedded ball – a player may take relief without penalty anywhere in the “general area” (except in sand in area not cut to fairway height or less)

Definition Club Length • The length of the longest club of the 14 (or fewer) clubs the player has during the round, other than a putter. • Club-lengths are used in defining the player’s teeing area on each hole and in determining the size of the player’s relief area when taking relief under a Rule.

  15. Ball Moved • Moved – only if “known or virtually certain” • If not known or virtually certain, ball played as it lies

  16. Definition Known or Virtually Certain • The standard for deciding what happened to a player’s ball. • Means more than just possible or probable. It means that either: • There is conclusive evidence that the event in question happened to the player’s ball, such as when the player or other witnesses saw it happen, or • Although there is a very small degree of doubt, all reasonably available information shows that it is at least 95% likely that the event in question happened “All reasonably available information” includes all information the player knows and all other information he or she can get with reasonable effort and without unreasonable delay.

  20. Definition Abnormal Course Condition • Any of these four defined conditions: • Animal Hole, • Ground Under Repair, • Immovable Obstruction, or • Temporary Water.

  21. Definition Animal Hole Any hole dug in the ground by an animal, except for holes dug by animals also defined as loose impediments (worms or insects). These include: • The loose material the animal dug out of the hole • Any worn-down track or trail leading into the hole, and • Any area on the ground pushed up or altered as a result of the animal digging the hole underground

  28. Limitations on Advice 2019 Rules of Golf • Cannot give to or ask for advice from anyone in the competition playing on the course • Cannot touch equipment to learn information • Caddie cannot deliberately stand behind player when taking stance for the stroke
