“What Happened” • June 12, 1994 • One man comes through the back door of the Simpson’s home • Goes to the front to find Nicole Simpson and brutally slashing her, nearly severing her neck from her shoulders • Then struggled with and repeatedly, about 30 times, stab Ronald Goldman • Goldman was returning sunglasses
“What Happened” • OJ Simpson was aboard AA flight #668 to Chicago at this point • He took off from LA at 11:45 taken to airport by limo driver Allan Park • However the Limo left the Simpson estate on Rockingham drive late (about a half hour late)
At the Hotel • When Simpson arrived in Chicago he received a call from the police • When they told him about the murder of his wife, he did not ask who what how or why • Later told that he smashed glass in grief which would explain the cut on his hand
Beginnings of the Trials • Robert Shapiro-Simpson’s Attorney and the arresting officer, agreed to have Simpson turn himself in by June 17 at 10 am • Didn’t show • Found what was believed to be a suicide note at his house • At 6:20 someone saw Simpson in his bronco with his friend AC Cowlings
Simpson’s run ended in his own driveway • Found in AC Cowlings car: • $8,750 in cash • a false beard and mustache • a loaded gun • and a passport • Trial is taken to Downtown district instead of Santa Barbara district where it happened (big mistake for the prosecution)
Plead • “Absolutely one hundred percent not guilty, Your Honor."
The Gloves • Prosecutor, Christopher Darden, called for Oj to try on the gloves in front of everyone • As he tried them on he said things like “They don’t fit. See?” • Then Simpson’s attorney Johnnie Cochran said the famous line, “If it don’t fit, you must acquit.” • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2YbY9eYmdM&feature=related • http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=jRth45yU_2Q – 4:20
Decision • After 3 hours deliberating about the case that had produced 150 witnesses over 133 days and had cost $15 million to try • They acquitted Orenthal James Simpson at 10 am on October 3, 1995 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=infLrZjJpNc
