Emotional Intelligence (EQ) • If you remember anything from this discussion remember this!!! EQ: Is the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and our relationships.

Key Characteristics to EQ: • Self-awareness • Self-control • Attitude & Motivation • Social Competency (ability to understand and influence others)

EQ allows us: • To set and achieve goals • To manage our emotions • To build rapport • To lead people Beware: Negative people can set the culture!!!
Self-control: • Our experiences do not have any set values in and of themselves. We give them value. • Once we have assigned a value to our experiences based upon our beliefs about them, we determine our emotional response and behavior as we react to them.
Opportunity to Grow: • Unmanaged emotions can lead to irrational thinking. • It’s important to think for yourself and learn to challenge beliefs from your past. “ Am I a Christian because I’m from America – would I be a Hindu if I grew up in India?” (Remember: Being different is not wrong.)
Attitude & Motivation: “ Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” - Lou Holtz “People are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” -Abraham Lincoln • The key to exhilaration in a job is not the task itself, but the state of mind created as you do the work. When we are motivated and have a positive attitude we do our best work, no matter what type of work it is.
