ApplehasreleasedSnowLeopardupdate 10.6.6whichisavailablefordownload. Forthoseinterestedinpuzzle-typegames fortheMacintoshandiPhone/iPad,thereis asite,<http://www.bigfishgames.com/ mac.html>,whichsellsthemfor$6and hasdailyreleasesofnewgames.(Yes,they offerothergamegenresaswellasPCand onlinegames.)Asifyoudidn’thave enoughmindlessactivitieswithwhichto fillyourday. RegardingWi-Fiprinteraccess,theprinter itselfneedstobedesignatedas“shared”for allnetworkuserstobeabletoaccessit.If thenetworkispassword-protected,allusers mustalsohavethepasswordorthey’llbe ableto“see”theprinter,butnotconnectto it.Thecomputer-to-printercommunication willshowjobsbeingsenttotheprinter,but theywon’trunandtheuserwon’treceive anyfeedbackfromtheprinter.Inaddition, dependingonthechannelsused,therearea numberofpotentialsourcesofinterference inthehome,mosttypicallythemicrowave ovenorolderwirelessphones.Thereare 16channels(1-16)available,butthedefault istypicallychannel6.GotoSystem Preferences>Network>Channelandtry anotherchannelselectionifyoufindthat youareencounteringproblemswithgetting areliableWi-Ficonnection.(Thereare somevariationsinthepathtothechannel selectiondependingonOSXoperating systemversion.) AtourFebruary3meeting,we’llbe lookingattheprocessofburningCDsand DVDs,someofthedifferentdiskburning programs(FinalCutexpress,DVDStudio Pro,Burn,Toast,…),thedifferences betweenadatadiscandamusic/videodisc, finalizingamulti-sessionorsingle-session disc,media/hardwarerequirements,and various“gotchas”gainedfrompainful experience. Wealmostimmediatelyranintoasnag. ManyUSBflashdrivescomewithpre- installedsoftwareforsecurityapplications ordemo-warefromvariousthirdparties whichoftenarenotMaccompatibleand justwastespace.Eddie’sapplication collectionconsumesalmostallofthe4GB drivecapacity,sothesefilesneededtobe removed.Furthermore,theflashdrives comeina“universalformat”,readableby bothMacandPCoperatingsystems.If youtendtouseaflashdriveacross platformsundervariousoperatingsystems, thisisconvenient;however,itlimitsthe usefulcapacitybecauseofthedifferences betweentheminimumblocksizes recognizedbytheOSs.SinceEddie maximizedthenumberoffilesinthis collectionspecificallyfortheMacOS,he wasgoingtoneedtoreformateachofthe flashdrives.Thiswouldn’thavebeen overlytimeconsumingexceptthatoneof thedrivesusedUSB1.1,not2.0,whichis hugelyslowerandoneofthedriveswasa 16GB,not4GB,model.Preconditioning thefirstflashdrivetookalmostallofthe meetingtime,soEddieofferedtodothisat homeusingaduplicatorandtobringthe completedunitsbackatourFebruary meeting,anofferwhichthemembers accepted.
