Wire-scanners #1 Quantify beam size at specific times in the SPS cycle including bunch-by-bunch (@40MHz) • Specifications: • 5% accuracy on beam size (above 1E11 charges) • Bunch by bunch acquisition (25 nsec slot) • Beam size consistency between IN and OUT scans (for same conditions in same cycle) • Scanners at optimal positions (beta-max H/V) • Mainly layout issue • Finding range for linear behaviour difficult (as seen in PS complex) LIU & Consolidation activities for SPS Lars K. Wire-scanners #2 • Status: • Mechanical (potentiometer) issues believed to be main error source • 40MHz acquisition available (MSWG April 2012 K. Cornelis) • Linearity (PM) issues to be followed (guidelines) • Plans for new wire-scanner system: • VIA to work on electronics (start October 2012) • PhD student to work on position determination • Install more precise (Fast Vacuum) BWS prototype in the SPS during LS1 (exact plane/location and time-scales to be discussed) • Launch series production allowing all others to be installed during LS2 LIU & Consolidation activities for SPS Lars K. Beam size evolution #1 Quantify evolution of transverse beam size during the SPS cycle • Specifications: • Detect 5% changes in beam size • Bunch by bunch (if possible) • 10 msec sampling intervals (if possible) • Status: • Two monitors with dipoles installed in the SPS (LSS5) • Issues seen on BGI system when last used (MSWG) • Plans: • New optics/electronics installed • Software design and BI commissioning during 2012 • Images integrated over 20msec • Hope to have systems operational during 2012 LIU & Consolidation activities for SPS Lars K. Ring beam size #3 Qualify betatron and dispersion matching in both planes at injection by measuring turn-by-turn beam size variations of circulating beam • Specifications: • Turn-by-turn for single bunch • Acquisition of 100 turn profiles • Two separate monitors needed • H, V and skew with zero and high dispersion • Status: • BTV screen with read-out installed (LSS5): • Issue with screen breakage to be understood • Plans: • Feasibility study in the LHC during 2012 • Beam tests in the SPS to be discussed • Study to be made for the SPS integration (LS1) LIU & Consolidation activities for SPS Lars K. Closed-orbit and trajectory #1 Measurement of orbit and turn-by-turn positions for existing (mainly) shoe-box SPS BPMs (~250) • Specifications for all BPMs: • Orbit acquisition @1KHz (up to 60 sec cycles …) - Single gate per SPS turn • First 50 turns for (ALL?) injection(s) – Several gates per turn (MAX?) • Capture: 10k turns starting from selected time (Same gate as orbit?) • Accuracy: 0.5mm (excluding alignment errors) • Resolution orbit mode: 0.1 mm (0.4 mm for single bunches) • Resolution trajectory mode: 0.4 mm (1.0 mm for single bunches) • Position interlocking (extraction and ring) preferablywithoutgating LIU & Consolidation activities for SPS Lars K. Closed-orbit and trajectory #2 • Statusfor existing system (MOPOS): • Allows single gate per SPS turn • Performance issues dominated by long cables • Also used for extraction position interlock LHC/CNGS in LSS4/LSS6 • Replacement systems not yet declared operational by OP • Long-term maintenance/reliability issues • Status for new system: • Radiation testing of electronics (PSI and CNGS) on-going (100krad required) • Investigating two solutions (fibres and coax-cable transmission) • Fibre solution (believed to give optimal performance): • Large fraction must be installed in LS1 with completion in LS2 • LIU funding (2MCHF) required (2012/2013 ++) • Coax solution (mainly for tunnel radiation concerns): • Influence for SPS Ring BLMs (upgrade relies on fibres available) • Limited upgrade possibilities LIU & Consolidation activities for SPS Lars K. Head-Tail instability observation #1 • Qualitative observation of coherent oscillation modes • Specifications: • Selectable bunch (25nsec slot) • Bandwidth: • Sampling: 20GHz • Analogue: 6 GHz • At least 1000 consecutive turns (H & V) at selected time in cycle • Status: • Present system works (one selected plane) • Bunch length and intensity range issues (pickup and cables) • Plans: • Purchase more performing acquisition system • 2012 (will be difficult to test anything) • Wait until early 2014 ?
