Your skeletal and muscular systems work together to make you move. • The actions of muscles, bones and joints working together is like a lever .
Muscles that you are able to control are voluntary muscles. Muscles that you cannot control consciously are involuntarymuscles.
Types of Muscle Tissue • SkeletalMuscle- the muscles that move bones. They are the most common and are attached to bones by thick bands of tissue called tendons.
They look striped, or striated when viewed under a microscope. They are voluntary and are able to contract quickly, but will become tired more easily than involuntary muscles.
Smooth Muscle Smooth Muscle : nonstriated, involuntary muscles that slowly contract and relax. They are found in your intestines, bladder , blood vessels, and other organs.
Cardiac Muscle - striated muscle found ONLY in the heart. It is involuntary and on average contracts about 70 times per minute.
Working Muscles Muscles in the body work in pairs. When one muscle contracts, the other one relaxes . When muscles contract, they become shorter. When muscles relax, they become longer . Muscles ALWAYS pull. They never push.
Muscles can become larger or smaller depending on how much they are used. .
Your muscles use lots of energyto contract and relax. Your blood carries energy-rich molecules (glucose) and oxygen to your muscle cells where the chemical energy in the molecules is released. This energy changes to both mechanical energy and thermal energy
