Matrices • Introduced by Arthur Cayley • Came about in 1857 • Better defined with the development of the ring theory in abstract algebra • Different ways of grouping numbers
Cramer’s Rule • Is a way of using matrices to solve a system of linear equations • It is named after Gabriel Cramer who published this rule in 1750. • Colin Maclaurin also studied the same information
Quarternion Society • From 1899 to 1913 • An International association for promoting the study of quarternions and allied systems of mathematics. • Alexander MacFarlane was the leader of the society
Quaternions • A Non-commutative extension of complex numbers. • First described by Sir William Rowan Hamilton in 1843 • They form a 4D normed division algebra over real numbers
Vectors • A directed line segment, comes about from it’s magnitude, length and direction. • They create real vector space
Francis Galton • 1888- initiated the use of correlation coefficients • Usually more than one variable is being used in an equation and can be cross correlated • You can use a correlation matrix
Numbers: real and complex • Real: numbers that can be given by an infinite decimal representation • Rational and irrational • Complex: when real and imaginary parts come together • Imaginary: i, a complex number whose squared value is a real number not greater than zero.
