  1. Chernobyl – Summary Link

  2. Chernobyl Summary 1 hundred times more radioactive material was released than had been by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The resulting steam explosion and fires released at least 5% of the radioactive reactor core into the atmosphere and downwind. Acute radiation syndrome (ARS) was originally diagnosed in 237 people on-site and involved with the clean-up. Of these, 28 people died as a result of ARS within a few weeks of the accident.

  3. Chernobyl – What Happened Electrical test being directed by an electrical engineer Uninformed leaders directing activities Test procedures and conditions not followed Nuclear plant procedures not followed Safety systems bypassed Poor safety culture

  4. Nuclear Physics Nuclear fission is the nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into smaller parts (lighter nuclei) producing free neutrons and photons (in the form of gamma rays) and releasing a very large amount of energy.

  5. Criticality A nuclear chain reaction occurs when one nuclear reaction causes an average of one or more nuclear reactions leading to a self-propagating series.

  6. What is “k” The effective neutron multiplication factor(k) is the average number of neutrons from one fission that cause another fission. The remaining neutrons either are absorbed in non-fission reactions or leave the system without being absorbed. k < 1 (subcriticality) k = 1 (criticality) k > 1 (supercriticality)

  7. Reactivity When describing kinetics and dynamics of nuclear reactors, the concept of Reactivity (nuclear) is used. Reactivity characterizes the deflection of reactor from the critical state (k=1). Poison is a reactivity material that absorbs neutrons to prevent fission
