Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5:17-20
Matthew 5:17-20 17 Do not think [suppose, assume] that I came to destroy [do away with, abolish] the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to destroy [do away with, abolish] but to fulfil. 18 Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, one iota or one jot will never pass from the law until all things have taken place. 19 Therefore whoever breaks [loosens, relaxes] one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men in the same way, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
What questions to ask? • What does it mean that Jesus fulfilled the Law? • What does it mean to ‘exceed the righteousness of Pharisees and scribes’? • Is it our desire to be great in the Kingdom of God? If so, how do we become great in the Kingdom?
Matthew 5:17-20 17 Do not assume that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfil.
Fulfil the Law: Definition WHAT JESUS DID NOT MEAN! • False Assumption: “I did not come to abolish the Law by calling it obsolete, but to bring an end to the Law observance by declaring a new era of law-free gospel.” (cf. ‘replacement theology’) WHAT JESUS DID MEAN! • Correct Understanding: “I did not come to oppose the Law, but to fulfil [do, obey] it to its full meaning and to reveal that meaning to you.”
Fulfil the Law: Reason 1 PARALLELISM 17 Do not assume that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfil. 19 [...] whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men in the same way, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Fulfil the Law: Reason 2 CONTEXT Matthew 5:27-30 (1 of 6 examples) 27 You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
Fulfil the Law: Reason 2 CONTEXT
Fulfil the Law: Reason 3 TRIUNE GOD • If Jesus overturns the Torah that was given to Israel by God, this would pit the Son against the Father, as if the Father gave a bad law and now the Son has come to do away with it. • It would also assume that God gave a deficient and inferior revelation which needed to be left behind when the better and late revelation of Jesus and grace came to the world. Romans 7:7, 14, 22 12 Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.
Matthew 5:18 18 Amen, I say to you, [1] until heaven and earth pass away, [2] one iota or one jot will never pass from the law [3] until all things have taken place.
Fulfil the Law: Summary When Jesus said that He came to fulfil the Law and the Prophets, He means that He came: • To keep and do (fulfil) the commandment of God that are in the Law, • To live out (fulfil) the prophetic words of God in the Prophets, • To reveal and teach (fulfil) the Law in its full meaning from the very heart of God, • To demonstrate that the Law and the Prophets are valid and applicable to all His disciples, even to us now. • But we are not to do them like the Pharisees and scribes...
Matthew 5:20 20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enterthe kingdom of heaven. • This implies that Jesus expected His disciples to whole-heartedly obey the Law according to His teaching, and not according to the distorted, lax practice of the scribes and Pharisees.
Righteousness of Pharisees: 1 PHARISAISM • Jesus frequently criticised the Pharisees for distorting and misrepresenting the Law and for not obeying it. Matthew 15:1-3 1 Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying, 2 "Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread." 3 He answered and said to them, "Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?
Righteousness of Pharisees: 1 PHARISAISM • Jesus frequently criticised the Pharisees for distorting and misrepresenting the Law and for not obeying it. Matthew 23:23 23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.
Righteousness of Pharisees: 1 PHARISAISM • Jesus frequently criticised the Pharisees for distorting and misrepresenting the Law and for not obeying it. Matthew 23:1-3 1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, 2 saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. 3 Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.
Righteousness of Pharisees: 2 1ST COMMANDMENT • Jesus pointed out that what they lacked was the true, spiritual sense of the heart of the Law, and that they were to perform them as the fruit of a heart given over to the true worship of God. Matthew 23:5-7 5 "But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. 6 "They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, 7 greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, 'Rabbi, Rabbi.'
Righteousness of Pharisees: 2 1ST COMMANDMENT • Jesus pointed out that what they lacked was the true, spiritual sense of the heart of the Law, and that they were to perform them as the fruit of a heart given over to the true worship of God. Matthew 23:16-19 16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.' 17 "Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?
Righteousness of Pharisees: 2 1ST COMMANDMENT • Jesus pointed out that what they lacked was the true, spiritual sense of the heart of the Law, and that they were to perform them as the fruit of a heart given over to the true worship of God. Matthew 23:27-28 27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. 28 "Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Righteousness of Pharisees: Summary • The Pharisees were more focused on the tradition (they have made from the Law of God) than on the actual Law of God and God Himself! • Thus, their zeal for the Law was about keeping the ‘man-made traditions’, and when they performed them, they assumed that they were obeying God’s Law. • Because of this assumption, they taught others also to keep the tradition, which is like blind leading blind. • The Pharisees were concerned more about how they looked before other men rather than how they looked before God. • Thus, their ‘keeping the Law’ was more about receiving approval from men ratherthan from God. • Ultimately, the Pharisees neglected doing the First Commandment by assuming and thinking that they were already doing it!
Righteousness of Pharisees: Summary John 5:39-47 39"You search the Scriptures, because you think [presume] in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. 41 "I do not receive honour from men. 42But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.43 I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 44"How can you believe, who receive honour from one another, and do not seek the honour that comes from the only God? 45"Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you - Moses, in whom you trust. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"
Our Application • Firstly, let’s honestly ask ourselves, “Is there a real desire in me to wholeheartedly pursue to be great in the Kingdom of God?” • If so, then this verse necessarily applies: 19 [...] whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men in the same way, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but WHOEVER DOES AND TEACHES THEM, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. • The motive of doing God’s commandment must derive from the heart of God who gives the commandment, and we do them with an attitude of ‘audience of One’. • Consequently, this cannot be done unless we do the First Commandment first, and in the case of the Sermon on Mount, to do the first 4 blessings of the Beatitudes.
Our Application • With such motive and attitude, we must wholeheartedly endeavour to do (keep and obey) the commandment of God, just as Jesus Himself did and fulfilled the Law and the Prophets. • Furthermore, we are also to teach the commandment to others: including the motive, attitude and obedience undergirding them, just as Jesus Himself did (i.e. Matthew 28:18-20). This requires us to read, study, pray and meditate on them. • This teaching is not just applicable to the Law only (the commandment), but also to the Prophets (the prophecies). • I believe we are to partake in the fulfilment of the prophecies in the Bible (e.g. End-time), just as Jesus did, does and will do.
Our Application • This cycle of doing the First Commandment to know the heart of God for the Second Commandment and doing the latter with a correct motive and attitude is the lens with which we must look through to understand what Jesus is teaching in the next section (5:21-48) and the rest of the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 6-7). • In other words, the first 4 Beatitudes is the lens with which we are to understand the Sermon on the Mount [the posture before God], and the last 4 Beatitudes is the motive and attitude with which we are to obey the teachings in the Sermon on the Mount [the posture before men]. • This is how we are to pursue and do God’s commandments to become great in the Kingdom of God.
