As you step through the glass doors you are standing in the Nave of the Cathedral.
You can see the wooden seats where people can sit in the Cathedral.
As you look up you see the arches high in the ceiling of the Cathedral.
As you move quietly down the aisle you come to the Sanctuary at the front of the Cathedral.
Crucifix Looking up you see Jesus on the cross. The cross, or crucifix, is made of bronze.
Below the cross is the Altar. It is made of beautiful white marble.
The Ambo, where the people read from the Bible, is on your left.
Behind the Altar is the Bishop’s Chair. This is where the Bishop sits when he is saying Mass at the Cathedral.
As you look behind the Altar you can see the Jubilee Pipe Organ. This is where music is played and the choir sings.
As you step down you will notice a special place behind the Altar. It is the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
The Blessed Sacrament Chapel is a very special place. It is a place for quiet prayer and reflection.
If you look closely at the glass wall you can see small pictures. They are drawn into the glass. The pictures show the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.
An important part of the Chapel is the Font. This is where babies and adults are baptised. The water is poured over the baby’s head. For adults they can step into the water of the font.
Oils for the sacraments are also kept in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
Around to the left you will find the Reconciliation Chapel. It is the place where people come to ask for forgiveness. The priest listens to what you have done wrong. He then forgives you and blesses you.
As you walk around the Cathedral you will see many Stained Glass Windows.
The Stained Glass Windows tell stories about Jesus’ life and the Saints through pictures made of coloured glass.
On the walls of the Cathedral you can follow the Stations of the Cross. Each station tells a part of the Easter story. They show Jesus’ death and resurrection.
As you walk down to the back corner of the Cathedral, near the glass doors, you find another Chapel. It is called the Mary, Woman of Faith Chapel.
This is a special place where people pray to Mary, the mother of Jesus. The statue shows Mary as a young woman, waiting to have her son Jesus.
Near the Mary chapel is a door that leads outside. If you walk out of the Cathedral you will find a small building next to the big Cathedral.
This small building is the Shrine of Blessed Mary MacKillop. Mary MacKillop was a nun who cared for children in Australia. She taught many poor children and helped them have a better life. Mary MacKillop died in 1909. She was beatified in 1995 and the special shrine was made to her.
In the Mary MacKillop Chapel you will see a large sculpture of Mary made out of a camphor laurel tree. The sculpture gives the Chapel a lovely smell as you walk in.
The Shrine of Blessed Mary Mackillopis a good place to pray and think about the people who look after you and love you.
