EL PESO DOMINICANO • The currency in the DR is the Dominican peso or the peso oro (gold peso). • Each peso (sign: RD$) is divided into 100 centavos (abbreviated: ¢). • It is circulated in 1 and 5 peso coins, as well as 10, 20, 50, 100, 1000, 2000, and 5000 peso paper notes. • When the first peso was issued in 1949, it was worth about the same as $1 US. • Today $1 US is worth 38 pesos. Food for Thought: Why might it be important to understand a country’s currency and exchange rates before traveling there?
