History of Belmont Hall • The home known today as Belmont Hall is one of the most historic houses in Delaware. • In 1684 William Penn granted a 600 acre parcel of land to Henry Pearman who named his property Pearman’s Choice. Thomas Collins purchased 91 ½ acres of the original grant in 1771 from John Moore. At that time there was a house on the property that was referred to as “The Manor House near Duck Creek”. • www.belmonthall.org
More History • Thomas Collins, who owned the house, became the 8th Governor of Delaware. • Collins died in the house in 1789. • The property passed through many people before it became owned by the Speakman family.

Speakman Family • The Speakman family took over the property after Collins death until the 1980’s. They loved Belmont and its history and made sure that all of her grandchildren knew their family history and appreciated the special historic place where they grew up. The house was sold to the State of Delaware in 1987 to build Route 13 bypass around Smyrna.
Belmont Hall Today • Currently, Belmont Hall is available to rent for special events such as weddings. It is open to the public to tour as well. Just the other day, I went there to take a tour and see first hand what Belmont Hall looked like and learn about all the cool things about Belmont Hall.
