I. The Cotton Boom A. 1793: Eli Whitney invents the Cotton Gin. i. clean 50 lbs./day ii. Changed the South in 4 Ways a. Cotton plantations (and slavery) spread as far west as TX. b. Planters grew cotton instead of other goods. c. More Nat. Am’s driven off land for cotton d. Slavery spread b/c growing cotton req. a large work force.
II. Slavery Expands A. 1820: $22 Mill. from Cotton B. 1860: $200 Mill. C. Price of Cotton ↑… price of slaves ↑ i. 1790s: male field hand: $300 ii. 1830s: $1000
III. Slavery Divides the South A. 2 kinds of Southerners: slave owners and non-slave owners i. 1/3 of southerners owned slaves in 1840 a. 1/10 of THOSE had more than 20 slaves ii. Many non-slave owners still supported slavery…just couldn’t afford to buy them.
IV. African Americans in the South A. 2 kinds of Af. Ams: Slaves and Free i. Enslaved AA’s = 1/3 of the total South pop in 1840! ii. Jobs slaves did: field work, house servants, craftsmen, factory work, day laborers. iii. 1840: 8 % of AAs in the South were free 1. couldn’t vote, no edu., hard to find work, might be recaptured
V. Cotton Dependency A. The South depends on Cotton for profits B. England depends on Cotton (and therefore slavery) to make fabric in their textile mills. C. The North depends on England to supply fabric to northern factories to make clothing, blankets, etc.
VI. Finding Strength in Religion A. Slaves used religion to endure slavery B. Masters used religion to enforce slavery: “Servants, obey your masters” C. Slaves inspired by Moses and the Hebrews. D. Spirituals: used to bring hope and send msgs.

VII. Families Under Slavery A. Children stayed w/ Mothers B. Many owners tried to keep fam’s together…reduced # of runaways C. Slaves married, had children, did their best to maintain fam. life.

VII. Slave Rebellions A. Many revolts were planned but failed B. Nat Turner’s rebellion was the most famous i. 70 slaves killed 55 whites ii. 16 of the slaves were killed iii. Nat Turner was caught, tried, and hanged. 1. As a result, 200 AAs were killed in revenge, laws about free AAs got stricter.
