The Chemistry of LifeMacromolecules AKA ~ Biochemistry
#4 Cell membranes are made of phospholipids. “bilayer” – means two layers
#6 Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen CHO with a little bit of O
#9 a lipid CHO with just a little O
#10 Glucose,Fructose,Cellulose,Starch If it ends in “ose” it’s a sugar!
#11 Carbon, Hydrogen Oxygen CHO with a LOT of O
#12 C6H12O6 It’s a ratio of 1:2:1
#13MonosaccaridesPolysaccarides Mono means 1. Poly means 1+. .
#14 short-term energy provide Fiber, &build PLANT Cell walls,& (Sugar high = short term energy)
#15 Fiber – found in plants Plant cell walls are made of cellulose!
#16 A Carbohydrate CHO With a lot of O 1:2:1 ratio
#17 insulin, keratin, hemoglobin, Collagen These are all enzymes in your body
#19 CHONCarbon, Hydrogen, oxygen, Nitrogen The “R” will vary…
#21 Protein You will also see an “R” or “R group”
#24 - CHONPCarbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphate “Sugar, phosphate, and nitrogen base”
#26 A house, a driveway, and a pool… We will be studying about these more in the future!
#27 Nucleic Acid Always look for the “P” – it’s easy to miss!
#30 - Catalyst Enzymes are nature’s catalyst in our body.
#32Lactase – breaks down sugar in milkAmylase – breaks down starchLipase – breaks down fats
#35 Without Enzymes lower the activation energy
#36 Enzymes are very specific and reversible. They are often called a lock and key.
Today: • Complete the Organic Molecules Worksheet (15) • When you finish, show me so you can pick up the reading and questions. • Read through the packet and write the questions and answer them at the end. • When you finish, so me so I can give you the vocabulary. • Copy Test 2 Vocabulary onto page 13. • Show me when you are finished so I can check you off for everything and you can get your phone back
Bellwork Study Flashcards 5 minutes alone, 5 minutes with a partner, and 5 minutes with your group. (Use all flashcards from this unit and the previous unit.) Turn in the Vocabulary and Packet from yesterday. Have your notebooks open to page 22 and be ready to copy notes. Make sure you have colored pencils/markers if you need them.
Pg. 22 Additional Notes You will COPY all these notes on the sheet I am giving you onto page 12. While you are doing this I will be coming around to check your work from yesterday. You will have 30 minutes to copy these notes.
What are Macromolecules? • Macromolecules – large organic molecules (meaning they contain carbon) used for various functions in living things • We can’t live without them!! • EVERYTHING we will learn for the rest of the semester will be based upon one of these macromolecules
Monomers and Polymers Most macromolecules are polymers, built of monomers. • Monomers: small, basic unit (ex. think Brick) • Polymers: complex structure made of monomers (ex. think Brick House)
Types of Macromolecules: • Carbohydrates • Lipids • Proteins • Nucleic Acids
Carbohydrates • Main Function= short-term ENERGY • Other uses = structure/support • Found in: sugar and starch (therefore breads, pastas, fruits and veggies)
2 types of Carbohydrates: a. Monomer = Monosaccharides – single sugar molecules • Ex. Glucose, Galactose, Fructose b. Polymer = Polysaccharides – large molecules formed by monosaccharides. • Ex. Starch, Glycogen, Cellulose
Energy Storage of Carbs • 4 calories/milligram • Because it is short term energy, your body can access it very easily so it is the FIRST thing you will break down to get energy when you need it!
