What is the issue that will prompt Louis XVI to call the Estates-General?
The economic crisis • Caused by financial mismanagement, food shortage • Increase in the rise of bread • The First and Second Estate rejects the idea of being taxed • The Estates-General is called to solve this issue
What issue do you think will impact their ability to solve the issue?
Vote by Bloc • Third Estate wants to Vote by Head so that their larger group is given better representation in the vote (because otherwise, the First and Second Estate will just vote together, making the Third Estate’s vote null)
Demand a Vote by Head and that the three Estates meet as ONE group (as opposed to three) • They called this group was called the “National Assembly” • They invited the other two Estates to join them
Demand that they continue meeting as three groups (based on advice of the nobles) • LOCKED the Third Estate out of the meeting in Versailles
How would the Third Estate respond to being locked out? • Hint: they were influenced by the Enlightenment
TENNIS COURT OATH • They met in the indoor tennis court and vowed to establish a constitution for France. They refused to leave until this was achieved
Louis XVI had to give in (there were too many of them) • Nobility, Clergy, and Everyone Else formed the National Assembly • First victory for the Bourgeoisie in the French Revolution • Louis XVI sent military to Versailles to maintain order and provide protection
