  1. E-Course New Year Greetings !! E-Course on Seismic Design of Tanks/ January 2006

  2. E-Course on Seismic Design of Liquid Storage Tanks January 16 – February 6, 2006 About the E-Course E-Course on Seismic Design of Tanks/ January 2006

  3. Welcome… • Welcome to the second E-Course in India in Civil Engineering. • First E-course was on IS 1893 (Part I):2002, in January 2003. • This presentation gives you an idea on conduct of the course. • Your instructors: • Sudhir K Jain of IIT Kanpur • Durgesh Rai of IIT Kanpur • O R Jaiswal of VNIT Nagpur E-Course on Seismic Design of Tanks/ January 2006

  4. Conduct of Course • The entire material will be divided into about eightlectures. • The lectures will also cover IITK-GSDMA Guidelines for Seismic Design of Liquid Storage Tanks. • This document is available on: http://www.iitk.ac.in/nicee/IITK-GSDMA/EQ08.pdf • Please download this document and keep a hard copy for ready reference. E-Course on Seismic Design of Tanks/ January 2006

  5. About IITK-GSDMA Guidelines • This document is not a BIS code. • BIS is considering it for IS 1893 (Part 2) of tanks • It has two parts • Part 1 contains Provisions & Commentary • Part 2 gives six solved examples E-Course on Seismic Design of Tanks/ January 2006

  6. About IITK-GSDMA Guidelines • Part 1 is written in Code-like format. • It gives Commentary of clauses, wherever necessary. • It has two column format; Provisions on left and Commentary on right side • Consistent with present international practice of code writing E-Course on Seismic Design of Tanks/ January 2006

  7. About IITK-GSDMA Guidelines • International codes & research papers used in the development of this document, are given in Clause 0.4 (p. 3), C0.5 (p.4), and Commentary References (p. 54, 55). • These may be referred in these lectures also • Some important references are given on next slide • It is suggested that you keep them also with you E-Course on Seismic Design of Tanks/ January 2006

  9. Conduct of Course • Lectures will be posted to you by email, twice a week. • If needed, we may extend duration of the course by one week. • During the course, some assignments will also be sent to you • Assignment may ask you to: • Read some parts of the guidelines • Answer some simple questions, or • Solve some simple problems E-Course on Seismic Design of Tanks/ January 2006

  10. Homework Assignments • To get maximum benefit from the course, you need to be regular with assignments. • Answers to the homework problems will be supplied a few days later. • You may compare your solution with the supplied solution and grade yourself E-Course on Seismic Design of Tanks/ January 2006

  11. Questions • You are encouraged to ask questions • The following schedule for questions and answers will be followed: • All questions about a lecture must be asked within three days of the lecture being sent • All questions about an assignment must be asked within three days of the solution being provided. E-Course on Seismic Design of Tanks/ January 2006

  12. Questions • The above schedule for questions will help • Consolidate all the questions and address them in a systematic way. • Participants to be regular in studying • It may not be possible for us to answer questions after the course is over. • Hence, make sure you ask all your queries during the course.
