Vandalism Facts • In 2007, nearly 60% of U.S. schools reported at least one major act of vandalism • That means 6 out of the 10 elementary schools in State College Area School District had at least one major act of vandalism each year
Vandalism can include: (have pictures of students acting out these situations) • doodling in library books • writing on desks • breaking windows • smashing furniture • writing on walls • littering
Legal consequences of Vandalism • Fines • arrests/jail time
Problem at our school • Out of those 60 % of schools that are vandalized each year, out of the 6 in state college area school district, Park Forest Elementary is one of them • Pictures of beautiful aspects of Park Forest Elementary • audio stating: Park Forest Elementary School is beautiful inside and out.
Examples at our School • Pictures of vandalism in the school: • writing on bathroom stalls • writing on water fountain • writing on desks • Littering • audio of: But when students choose to disrespect school property, PFE is not as beautiful anymore
What Can You Do? • What can YOU do? • (students holding pictures, what can I do? then students holding pictures: I can...) • You can make THE difference! (students holding pictures: I can...)
Six Steps to ending the problem at PFE • 1. Be proactive, don’t litter/vandalize • 2. Model respect for community property • 3. don’t participate/ engage if you see it occurring • 4. help to clean up if it’s littering • 5. tell a teacher/adult • 6. Be a good citizen
Closing Slide • respect even refers to school and community property, This is our community, let’s take care of it. Show your penguin pride! celebrate our beautiful school (picture of kids smiling, then picture of them jumping in the air and audio of them screaming “YEAAAAAA!!”)
