  1. The Gospel of Persistent Faith The Gospel of Persistent Faith Colossians 1:21-23 Colossians 1:21-23

  2. The Gospel of Persistent Faith • 19 For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. 21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds,

  3. The Gospel of Persistent Faith • 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— 23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister. (Colossians 1:19-23)

  4. 1. Remember who you were • And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds… (Colossians 1:21) • But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear. (Isaiah 59:2)

  5. 1. Remember who you were • For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

  6. 1. Remember who you were • 1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. (Ephesians 2:1-3)

  7. 1. Remember who you were • And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds… (Colossians 1:21)

  8. 1. Remember who you were • 20 “That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22 deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. 23 All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.” (Mark 7:20-23)

  9. 2. Reflect on what Christ has done for you • 21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death… (Colossians 1:21-22) • For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God… (1 Peter 3:18)

  10. 2. Reflect on what Christ has done for you • “The biblical gospel of atonement is of God satisfying himself by substituting himself for us…The substitute bears the penalty that we sinners may receive the pardon.”

  11. 2. Reflect on what Christ has done for you • “The concept of substitution may be said, then, to lie at the heart of both sin and salvation. For the essence of sin is man substituting himself for God, while the essence of salvation is God substituting himself for man. Man asserts himself against God and puts himself where only God deserves to be; God sacrifices himself for man and puts himself where only man deserves to be.

  12. 2. Reflect on what Christ has done for you • Man claims prerogatives which belong to God alone; God accepts penalties which belong to man alone.” – John Stott

  13. 2. Reflect on what Christ has done for you • All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him. (Isaiah 53:6) • He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

  14. 2. Reflect on what Christ has done for you • Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ… (Romans 5:1)

  15. 3. Recall the goal of salvation • 21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— (Colossians 1:21-22) • Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1)

  16. 3. Recall the goal of salvation • 26 “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.” (Ezekiel 36:26-27)

  17. 3. Recall the goal of salvation • 1 See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. (1 John 3:1-3)

  18. 4. Remain committed to moving forward by faith • 21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— 23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister. (Colossians 1:21-23)

  19. 4. Remain committed to moving forward by faith • For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:6)

  20. 4. Remain committed to moving forward by faith • 23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)
