The Author / The Apostle • Many scholars have concluded that the author of the Gospel is anonymous. • Matthew, most likely a Jewish Christian scribe who spoke and wrote in Hebrew. • The author, however, might of only known the Apostle Matthew.
When / Where • Many have come to an agreement that the Gospel of Matthew was written during the early AD’s. • Perhaps somewhere between 80 AD and 85 AD. • In addition, the Gospel can be traced back to Antioch, Syria. The place where it was most likely written.
To Who? The Gospel of Matthew was written in Greek targeting predominantly Greek speaking Jewish Christians.
How Jesus is Portrayed • The Gospel relates Jesus to Moses. • Matthew argues that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy. • Also, he strongly urges Christians to spread Jesus’ words and wisdom to all nations
The “First” Gospel • Why is the Gospel of Matthew considered to be the “first” gospel, when Mark is generally accepted to be the first? • This is because the Gospel of Matthew contained well-ordered and contains detailed teaching lessons. In addition, Matthew’s emphasis on the Old Testament prophecy fulfillment creates a connection between Old and the New Testament.
Major Themes The Gospel contains roughly 80% of the material found within the Gospel of Mark. The major themes of the Gospel include, Jesus’ ministry in Galilee, his journey to Jerusalem, Jesus’ passion, Death, and Resurrection and his ascend into heaven. Other themes included are: Judgment, which relates to second coming of Christ. Discipleship, which relates to sacrificing earthy possessions for eternal life with Christ and the Father.
More Themes • Jesus is Emmanuel, The name Emmanuel means “God with us”, or the Messiah. Which means the salvation of Jew and Gentile. • The Importance of Church, Matthew mentions the word “ekklesia” which means Church, or the gathering of Christian in liturgy. • Right Instruction, The Gospel of Matthew is an instruction manual for new Christians and disciples alike. It teaches, righteousness, prayer, and conversion.

Vocabulary • Phylacteries- small leather capsules that contained miniature scrolls with four passages from the Jewish Law. It was mandatory for adult males to carry these (age 14). • Gehenna- The Jewish term for “hell.” • Adultery- Infidelity in marriage
